A Journey to Matapalo: Discovering a Community

When we first set out on our discovery trip to Matapalo, Costa Rica, we didn’t quite know what to expect. What we did know was that we had an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children, and that was more than enough to fuel our excitement. Our mission for this trip was simple- to assess the needs of the school and most importantly connect with the incredible people who make the school a vibrant place for learning and growth.

We had an opportunity to meet the principal, and we could instantly feel her love, passion and unwavering dedication for the students to improving their education.

Walking through the campus, we saw areas that needed attention: a cafeteria that could use a major upgrade, a playground that had potential but needed some love, and an outdoor space that, with a little work, could be transformed into a welcoming environment for learning and play. We envisioned a cleaner, brighter, and more functional space where children could eat their meals in comfort, where they could run and play freely, and where the entire community could take pride in what they had built together.

This discovery trip was just the beginning. It laid the foundation for what would soon become a labor of love—an opportunity to give these children the environment they deserve. And as we left Matapalo, we carried with us not just a plan, but a deep connection to a community that welcomed us with open hearts. We knew that when we returned, it wouldn’t just be to build a cafeteria or clean up a playground—it would be to build relationships, spread joy, and create lasting change.
